TRANSPORTATION

More than 50 percent of the nation's population resides within a 500-mile radius of Harrison County, and more than 8 million reside within 100 miles. Harrison County is conveniently situated to provide transportation of finished products to market and to receive necessary raw materials.

HIGHWAYS

Cadiz, the Harrison County seat, is located near the center of the county at the hub of three highways providing convenient access to markets or from suppliers in any direction.

U.S. 22 is a major east-west interstate grade highway that travels through Steubenville to Pittsburgh and points east. Pittsburgh International Airport is less than an hour away, and downtown Pittsburgh is 15 minutes further. At Steubenville, U.S. 22 crosses Ohio 7, a four-lane highway which parallels the Ohio River north to south.

Westbound U.S. 22 leads to Cambridge, some 45 minutes away and the site of one of the most heavily-traveled Interstate highway intersections in America. From there, I-70 is the primary route to Columbus and westward, while I-77 is the established roadway to the south and southeastern areas of the country.

U.S. 250 is a major southeast-northwest highway connecting Harrison County with Wheeling, W.Va., 25 miles to the southeast. In the other direction, U.S. 250 is the route to northbound I-77 at New Philadelphia, an important link to the Akron-Canton-Cleveland area. U.S. 250 continues on to provide access to northwestern Ohio and the Toledo-Detroit, Windsor, Canada area.

Ohio 9 is a north-south highway that connects Harrison County to St.Clairsville, 20 minutes to the south, and with I-70, the area's primary east-west corridor. Route 9 continues northward through Carroll County to other northeastern Ohio locations.

Other state routes serving the county are: Ohio 151, an east-west route that spans the northern portion of the county, generally from U.S. 22 and the Steubenville area to U.S. 250 and on to I-77; and Ohio 800, a north-south route that crosses the western portion of Harrison County.

RAILROADS

Harrison County is served by two railroads which provide rail access to the northern and eastern portions of the county and into Cadiz.

The Ohio Central Railroad is an east-west transportation link that travels through the northern Harrison County communities of Bowerston, Scio, and Jewett.

The Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad is a southeast to northwest line that parallels the Ohio Central Railroad through a portion of the county, and also spurs into Cadiz and to the coal mining areas of the southeastern portions of the county. This line provides a direct rail link between the Ohio River and the Port of Toledo on Lake Erie.

AIRPORTS

The Harrison County Airport, located adjacent to the Harrison County Industrial Park on the south edge of Cadiz, is licensed by the Ohio Department of Transportation. The local airport features a 4,300-foot lighted runway, instrument landing facilities, fuel, repair, and other services.

Pittsburgh International Airport is less than a one hour drive to the east on U.S. 22, providing convenient connections both nationally and internationally. Also easily accessible is the Canton-Akron Airport, a one hour drive to the north on I-77.
